Being new parents can be exciting and terrifying at the same time. You are going to see a lot of surprises when you have a new baby.
You must have already prepared yourself a lot from making sure the nursery is ready in time to reading every books related to pregnancy.
Even if you are prepared there are some things that you should know about your baby to ensure they are healthy and thrive well.
So we have shared below some of the things that might surprise you when you welcome a new born into your life :-
1- Breast crawl
Babies should have skin to skin contact with their mother. This means as a mother when you place them on your belly they are programmed to crawl up to your chest to find comfort.
2- Head
Your baby’s head is incredibly soft and they won’t be able to hold it up for a long time. In these cases, you can assist them by holding up their head.
3- Tummy time
You should ensure babies get enough tummy time from a young age. This helps in their development.
They should have 20 minutes of tummy time everyday to get stronger.
4- Umbilical cord
Sometimes your baby’s umbilical cord can smell a lot. It can even start to dangle and this might really sound disgusting but it’s the truth.
Try to keep the umbilical cord as dry as you can so it can easily fall off.
5- Baby acne
Sometimes your baby’s face can get covered with zits and bumps and this will surprise you. It can even spread to other parts of their baby.
In these cases, ensure that you use sensitive soap on your little one. Keep their zit areas dry from their saliva. These zits develop due to hormones left in the baby from their mom.
6- Baby eczema
If your baby develops rashes on the folds of their skin, then it’s most probably eczema. You can talk to your paediatrician about this and get it treated right.
7- Smile
When your baby is between their first 6- 8 weeks then they might appear to be smiling but it’s just their body reflexes or gas.
8- Smell
Your baby has incredible smelling powers and can identify their parents from their smell. This is why they immediately soothe down when they smell their parents nearby or if they have their parent’s shirt near them.
9- Tears
Sometimes your baby can cry without spilling any tears. Their tear duct is still underdeveloped.
If your baby has tears in their eyes even when they are not crying then do contact your paediatrician.
10- Sleep
The first few weeks you welcome your baby into this world, your baby will sleep a lot.
They need sleep to adjust to being outside their mother’s womb. They can easily get tired after being awake for 30 minutes.
They will only wake up to eat or get their diaper changed before sleeping again.
